About Calculator-401K.com

Calculator-401K.com is a free retirement-planning platform that combines a precise 401(k) calculator suite with AI-assisted educational content, live macro-economic data from the Federal Reserve, and interactive scenario tools that go beyond what traditional online calculators offer.

We were built around a simple observation: most 401(k) calculators give you a single, sterile number — “you’ll have $1,247,302 at age 65” — without any of the context that actually matters: what is that worth in today’s purchasing power?, what if the market crashes the year before you retire?, how much will fund fees actually cost you over 30 years?, what happens to my projection if I take a five-year break to raise a child?

Our tools answer those questions.

Our Mission

Retirement planning should not be reserved for people who can afford a personal financial advisor. Our mission is to give every American worker free access to the same depth of analysis a fee-only fiduciary would run for a paying client — clear projections, inflation-adjusted reality checks, fee transparency, Monte Carlo risk simulations, and concrete action plans — without selling anything, capturing personal data, or pushing affiliate products.

What Makes Us Different

1. Real Purchasing Power, Not Sci-Fi Numbers

Every projection is automatically converted into today’s dollars using the live Consumer Price Index from the Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED). When you see “$2.1M at retirement,” we’ll also show you what that actually buys at today’s prices — typically around 40–50% of the headline number after 30 years of inflation.

2. Monte Carlo Risk Simulation

Single fixed-rate calculators (the “assume 8% per year forever” type) hide the most important truth about investing: sequence of returns matters. Our scenario engine runs 1,000 simulated market paths and shows you the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, and 90th percentile outcomes — including what happens if a 2008-style crash hits in the year before you retire.

3. Fee X-Ray

A 1.5% expense ratio sounds small. Over 30 years it can quietly cost you $400,000 of compound growth. Our Fee X-Ray tool shows you the dollar impact of your current fund expenses versus a low-cost index alternative, plus how many years earlier you could retire by switching.

4. Life-Event Timeline

Real careers are not smooth. People take parental leave, change jobs, get laid off, take 401(k) loans, take sabbaticals. Our timeline tool lets you model future life events on the fly and shows the recovery path — including the exact catch-up contribution needed to get back on track.

5. Personalized Action Plan

After running your numbers, you can generate a personalized 5-step action plan — what contribution percentage to set, how to maximize your employer match, how to allocate by risk tolerance, when to start catch-up contributions, and how to think about Required Minimum Distributions later in life. The plan is generated for your specific situation and can be printed or saved.

How Our AI Editorial Layer Works

Calculator-401K.com publishes educational articles authored by an AI editorial system that runs on our private inference infrastructure (we do not use third-party API providers for content). Every article is generated against live FRED macro data, so guidance about inflation, rates, and contribution limits reflects current conditions rather than stale numbers from years ago. Every article is reviewed against a hard set of editorial constraints (factual accuracy, IRS rule citations, no investment-product recommendations, mandatory disclaimer footer).

You can read the full methodology page for details on our calculation formulas, the AI prompt structure we use, and the validation steps every article passes through before publication.

What We Don’t Do

  • We do not sell financial products.
  • We do not have affiliate relationships with brokers, fund families, or 401(k) plan providers.
  • We do not store your inputs. The numbers you enter into our calculators stay in your browser.
  • We do not provide personalized financial advice. Our content is educational. For advice tailored to your full financial picture, work with a fee-only fiduciary advisor.
